Haven to give away nearly 50,000 books!

Haven Holidays have teamed up with Words for Life, a campaign by the National Literacy Trust, to give away nearly 50,000 books - to children on their 35 family holiday parks.

Every family arriving on a Haven park on the weekend of August 19th will receive a goody bag containing four books for children – including titles such as ‘Amber the Orange Fairy’, ‘How to train your Dragon’ and a choice of popular ‘Where’s Wally’ titles as well as the ‘Rangers Apprentice’ which is aimed at 9-11year olds.

The initiative is designed to encourage a love of reading amongst children and follows a similar successful giveaway in 2009.

A spokesperson for Haven Holidays said, ‘There is always so much to do on our parks with a wide choice of facilities, activities and entertainment – but we know that children need some quiet time and we’re hoping that the free books will tempt children to spend some time reading – maybe when they’re relaxing around the pool or in their holiday home.

Jack Sallabank from the National Literacy Trust said “Schools and parents often report a noticeable dip in a child’s literacy level when they return from the summer break so it’s important to keep their minds active and give them the opportunity to read during the summer break. We are therefore very excited to be working with Haven Holiday again and having the opportunity to deliver another fantastic campaign.”

Children who develop a love of reading at an early age get a head start with language skills which are invaluable for their future. Holidays provide the environment and quality time with parents and carers that will allow kids the space and freedom to discover the enjoyment of reading.

The free books are an added bonus – but the fun-filled goody bag is not the only free activity that Haven offer this summer.

Kids can look forward to free heated indoor and outdoor pools, kids’ clubs for all ages, mini tennis, mini archery and mini fencing, football coaching and ‘B Fit’, Annabel’ Creative Kitchen sessions, Wildlife Detectives and a full programme of daytime and evening entertainment including summer-time pantos, wrestling, circus performances, character shows, music and stage-shows.

A seven night holiday with Haven, arriving on August 19th starts at just £529 for up to six people based on Standard accommodation at a choice of parks including Golden Sands, Craig Tara and Carla Gran. Call 0871 230 1900 or click on www.haven.com to book.

The giveaway has been supported by publishers Hachette, Walker Books, Random House and Spar.

Haven Fun & Fitness awards for ‘Sports Tot of the Year’

Two deserving youngsters have recently become the first ever ‘Sports Tots of the Year’ in a nationwide search by the Haven Fun & Fitness campaign to find Britain’s sportiest tots.

Four year old Billy Bright, of Twickenham and three year old Lilly May Moyle of Exeter has both received awards in recognition of their sporting prowess, with judges describing them as ‘an inspiration’ to other youngsters.

Judges on behalf of the Haven Fun & Fitness Campaign were unanimous in their decision to make the ‘Most Sporting Potential’ award to Billy, whilst Lilly May received an award for her gymnastic skills.

Billy is already showing exceptional talent across a number of different sports but it was the video of his golf swing that made him stand out from other nominees. Billy also excels at tennis and rugby, can swim and will happily have a go at body boarding and snorkelling and loves skiing.

Three year old Lilly-May demonstrated exceptional floor and balance skills as well as a commitment to succeed that is well beyond her years.

The judges commended the determination – and obvious enthusiasm of both award winners saying, ‘It’s so important that the children actually enjoy their activities. Both our Award winners demonstrate a real enjoyment of their chosen sport and that was really important to us when we made the final decision.’

Parents and carers were asked to nominate under-5’s in a choice of three different categories – ‘Gymnastics’, ‘Tennis’ and ‘Most Sporting Potential’. Haven hoped to highlight and encourage early potential and reward youngsters showing unusual talent with additional coaching or lessons in their chosen sport.

The Fun & Fitness Campaign received dozens of nominations from all over the country but two winning tots really stood out for their talents across a range of sports.

A spokesperson for Haven Fun & Fitness said, ‘We’re passionate about promoting physical activities for all under-5’s. Exercise is so important to the health and well-being of younger children and yet sadly many children don’t meet the recommended daily minimum. Over the last three years Haven Fun & Fitness has benefitted thousands of under-5’s all around the UK by providing free sports equipment to pre-schools and nurseries to help make fitness more fun.

Launching the Sports Tot of the Year Awards has allowed us to seek out some exceptional youngsters and provide them with valuable opportunities to improve their potential.’

Organisers have confirmed that the Sports Tot Awards will be an annual event and Haven Fun & Fitness will be looking to receive nominations for next years’ awards when they re-launch their giveaway campaign in September.
