Haven to recruit 350 new Funstars!

A total of 350 jobs are up for grabs when a recruitment roadshow comes to Manchester in January.

The holiday industry jobs are aimed at young people and come amid growing concern about a “lost generation” of school and university leavers unable to find work.

Haven Holidays is launching the recruitment drive to find 350 ‘FunStars’ as the boom in UK tourism caused by the “staycation” looks set to continue for another year.

The FunStars will help entertain thousands of families and children at Haven’s 35 holiday parks around the UK in 2011 with the prospect of permanent positions for the right recruits.

The campaign marks a subtle shift in role for Haven’s FunStars who are broadening their skills to be more actively involved in enhancing the holiday experience for guests.

Hundreds of hopefuls are expected to attend the auditions at The Portland Thistle Hotel in Portland Street on January 11th to snap up the vacancies early on.
Haven is one of the biggest employers of entertainers in the UK.

Jamie Thomson, Entertainments Manager for Haven said: “In 2011 the FunStars will be adopting more of a ‘holiday host’ role and their main aim will be to create the holiday magic. They will be involved with entertaining guests in our team shows but most importantly they will have a greater role in running our children’s clubs and making sure everyone has a fantastic holiday. For those with the right qualities we are also offering more opportunities to take up year round roles rather than being a seasonal job.”

Jamie added “Personality is a big factor in selecting our FunStars and for the first time we will also be having some Junior Judges on the panels. So those going along to the auditions will also have to show they can win over some of our most discerning customers!”

Candidates for the roles can brush up their skills in front of the camera in rehearsal pods whilst they are waiting for the auditions. And the videos will be uploaded on a special channel on You Tube to share the moment with viewers – with a prize for the candidate that scores the most hits!

Why travel further?

As the popularity of UK holidays continues to increase many families are recognising the benefits of owning a holiday home within easy reach.

Perhaps the single biggest question that deters many of us from taking the plunge and buying a holiday home is ‘will I use it enough to justify the expense?’

The attractions of a dream home in the sun have obvious appeal. But tiresome travel by flight or ferry takes away the spontaneity of using it and the downside of managing the property from a distance, combined with the vagaries of property law in other countries is enough to keep most of us from signing away our savings.

But as the staycation looks set to stay more people are discovering the benefits of buying a holiday home closer to home. And for many families this can be just a few miles from where they live.

Haven Holidays, who sell holiday homes at choice of 34 holiday parks around the UK say that the majority of their customers live less than two hours drive away from their holiday home and some even closer.

Whilst initially this might be surprising, research carried out amongst new customers revealed some very sound reasons for buying so close to home.

The company cited customers who use their caravan almost as an extension to their own property, allowing them to downsize their own home whilst retaining the flexibility of accommodating visitors. Family and especially grandchildren can stay nearby on the holiday park with the added attraction of all the facilities and activities on offer.

And for many families it’s a place where their children can enjoy all the benefits of being on holiday for the whole of the long school holidays – whilst remaining close enough to home for a working parent to commute.

A holiday home within easy reach provides some couples with the flexibility of making a spur of the moment decision to spend a night at the caravan.

‘Sometimes we just pop to the park for a night out,’ said Alan Webber, who owns a holiday home at Devon Cliffs, twenty minutes drive from his home in Exeter. ‘We keep food and clothes in the caravan so if we decide to stay everything we need is there. Initially we thought of buying in Cornwall, but we were concerned that the drive would mean we’d only use our holiday home occasionally.’

Their purchase proved a popular choice, not just for Alan and wife Barbara but also his extended family of children and grandchildren who regularly visit the park. With nightly entertainment at a choice of three venues, a cafe bar and restaurant plus a swimming pool and spa it has plenty to offer even just for an overnight visit.

Carole and Mike Flavelle, who live in Truro say ‘ buying a caravan just ten miles away at Haven Holidays’ Perran Sands was one of the best lifestyle decisions we’ve made.’

The park is popular with families from all over the country who love the location directly on one of Cornwall’s top surfing beaches. But for the Flavelles it’s just a twenty minute drive from their own home.

‘At first we used the caravan as a sort of glorified beach hut,’ Carole continued. ‘We came to enjoy the beach, the surfing and a round of golf. But it rapidly became a real home from home. It’s a great place to relax, meet up with friends and enjoy spending time with our family.’

Two years ago the Flavelles upgraded their holiday home to a Swift Chamonix with a full height patio doors opening onto decking - perfect for barbecues and enjoying the glorious views of the sea.

Whilst initially people couldn’t understand why they’d bought the caravan, now the couple’s closest friends have bought one too!

So what are the costs of owning a caravan holiday home and how does it compare with a traditional holiday cottage?

This year thousands of new families and couples have opted to buy a caravan holiday home with Haven, typically spending between £20-25,000 on their purchase although it’s possible to buy a ‘pre-loved starter home’ on some parks for as little as £10,000.

With no legal fees, stamp duty or surveys it’s a very tempting – and instant - proposition. A cash deposit of £3000 will secure a holiday home costing £14,995. Typically finance can be arranged on the basis of 84 monthly payments of £195.28* which will include the site fees and insurance for the first year.

Top of the range caravan holiday homes – or lodges - can cost anything up to £100,000 but for that money you can expect full contemporary styling with heating, double-glazing, ensuite facilities, beautifully fitted kitchens, free-standing furniture and a prime position with a wonderful view.
The new models for 2011 will soon be available at all Haven parks, including a four bedroom holiday home that comfortably sleeps ten people.
Whilst it’s possible to recoup some or all of the running costs through sub-letting (and Haven offer a managed sub-let service) most people buy to improve their lifestyle and not as a financial investment.

A spokesperson for Haven said, ‘The bubble seems to have burst on places like Spain as a second holiday home destination. The high value of the Euro and problems with air travel have put many people off.
This year more of our new owners are ‘empty nesters’ – older couples who have opted to make an investment in the quality of their lifestyle in preference to maintaining savings that simply aren’t generating any interest. And they enjoy very regular and extended use of their holiday homes throughout the season.

We offer exclusive facilities for owners and a programme of leisure events and entertainment that encourage people to enjoy an active social life and strong feeling of community around their holiday home. And there’s always plenty going on when they invite their children and grand-children to stay.’

Top Ten Haven Happiness Factors

As David Cameron asks the nation what makes them happy, Haven Holidays are asking ‘what makes people happy on holiday’?

Haven, who have 35 family holiday parks in the UK, have put together their top ten happiness factors based on feedback from customers this summer.

1. Being by the seaside.
Yup, beaches, swimming, surfing, games of beach cricket, making sand castles, rock pooling, fresh sea air and walking along the coast are still top of the pops amongst UK holidaymakers.

2. Quality time with families.
Doing all those things together that you only ever do on holiday – like riding a Daisy Bike or chasing each other down the slides in the swimming pool.

3. Loads of activities.
This is where Haven score well with their customers – there are plenty of activities for all ages from mini archery and water confidence sessions for tots to climbing walls and Aqua Jet Extreme for bigger kids.

4. Doing nothing.
A great favourite with busy parents and stressed out couples. Time with no pressure and no deadlines.

5. Good accommodation.
Whether it’s a short break or a fortnight away comfort on holiday is high on the importance agenda – and guess what, Haven have invested £12million in new accommodation for 2011!

6. Food.
Most people ditch the diet on holiday in favour of having a good time - whether it’s a break from the kitchen with family meals out, good old British fish and chips, pizzas delivered to your door, ready supplies of ice-cream, cream teas or regional dishes and local produce from the farmer’s market.

7. Swimming.
We do more of it on holiday. Especially if there are lots of other water activities on offer as well. Haven are keen to encourage this with a whole raft of things to do in the pool and a constant investment in watery fun – adding lazy rivers , space bowls and more slides at several parks for 2011.

8. Trying something new.
All those things you think about but don’t get around to – or that simply aren’t available closer to home. Horse-riding maybe, golf or fencing.

9. Evening entertainment.
Especially if you don’t have to worry about babysitters and can enjoy a night out when the kids will enjoy coming along too.

10. Staying in the UK.
More people are discovering that you don’t actually need to travel too far to have a good time. Good old Britain has got fabulous beaches, great resorts, loads of visitor attractions and you don’t have to add to your carbon footprint – or stress levels – by traveling overseas. And it’s good value for money!

Click on www.haven.com or call 0871 230 1900 to see why Haven Holidays ticks the happiness factor boxes. Prices for Spring break in 2011 start at less than £100 for a family of six including early booking discount – available at a choice of parks in Standard accommodation.

It’s win win at Haven for football lovers!

Speaking in support of England’s 2018 World Cup bid Prince William declared, “Football is England’s national game, it is part of the fabric of our nation,” and Haven Holidays couldn’t agree more.

Haven has long supported the physical wellbeing of children with campaigns such as Fun & Fitness, which has provided thousands of nurseries with free sports equipment, not to mention a whole raft of sports activities available to youngsters as part of a Haven holiday.

But next year Haven will be celebrating all things football by providing the already incredibly popular football coaching for free on all 35 of its holiday parks! After all, just because the recent World Cup bid has been lost, this doesn’t diminish the UK's love of football – and Haven are passionate about encouraging young talent.

And if your little ones aren’t exactly budding Premiere League players, they won’t miss out either. Haven offer a huge range of other sporting activities from Adventure Golf and rope courses to fishing, many of which are included in the cost of a holiday. Younger children can also pick up some new skills with mini archery, mini fencing or mini tennis whilst you dance yourself fit with one of our new B Fit sessions!

Haven’s wide range of facilities including their thrilling SplashZones and indoor and outdoor pools will also ensure that the kids are constantly active and if the day’s activities haven’t thoroughly worn them out, evening entertainment is also included for all the family to enjoy.
